Through “the journey to Emmaus” pastoral methodology, the Church is reminded that her mission to the poor is not limited to works of charity or prophetic voices alone (speaking truth to power).

It includes bringing the presence of the Risen Christ alive in the situations of structural injustice — being with the wounded, contemplating the suffering face of God in them, listening to their cries, and walking with them towards God’s justice, hope and healing.

The Journey to Emmaus -The pastoral accompaniment of movements for the victims of injustice as they journey to Emmaus.

In South Africa, countless civil society organisations and movements for the victims of injustice have risen up to challenge structural injustice.

Over the years, some of these movements have turned to the Church, not seeking recognition or charity, but solidarity and pastoral accompaniment.

Pastoral accompaniment is about helping the movements of victims of injustice to recognize the Risen Christ who is walking with them on their journey to Emmaus.

As we walk with these movements on their road to Emmaus, we strive to do four things:

Listen deeply to their stories — to recognise the suffering face of Christ in their pain and struggle.

Anchor activism in prayer — nurturing a spirituality that sustains hope and courage in the face of injustice.

Promote non-violence — working together to abandon violence, while developing non-violent methods of challenging those in power.

Promote dialogue – in some cases, helping various parties see the need for negotiation.

Speak prophetically in solidarity — raising our voices alongside theirs to proclaim justice and dignity for all.

This website is a humble space where we share our journey with the movements of the poor as they walk towards Emmaus.
